Transforming Lives in Mongolia
| The ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital had just completed a very successful sight-saving program in Mongolia and I’m very eager to share with you a nice story. Our team met a girl named Zolzaya, who was treated by ORBIS more than 15 years ago. Zolzaya joined the Mongolia Flying Eye Hospital program for weeks 2 & 3 as a translator, helping to make sure that each patient felt at home - comfortable and safe aboard the Flying Eye Hospital. |
| As a child, Zolzaya suffered from a condition called Duane’s Syndrome - a rare, congenital eye movement disorder most commonly characterized by the inability of the eye to abduct or move outwards. At that time, her family was told that nothing could be done. Because of this rare condition, Zolzaya was introduced to ORBIS doctors during a hospital-based program in 1995. The ORBIS doctors were able to treat her, and use this opportunity to exchange skills with the local doctors on how to approach this rare disease. |
| According to Zolzaya, her eye condition prevented her from doing many things, including developing socially at school and within peer groups. The ORBIS procedure not only corrected the deviation of her left eye (allowing proper eye health development), but allowed her to emerge from her seclusion. |
|
Now 22 years old, she has graduated University, and is working as a translator for a Mongolian-based road and civil construction company – The New Progress Group. Her experience with ORBIS changed her life forever and has inspired Zolzaya to become an Advocate for Sight. Through her inspiration, Zolzaya is committed to sharing her experience in order to raise the awareness of pediatric eye care to the families of Mongolia. She hopes that parents will learn from her experience and realize the importance of eye care, not just for healthy eye development, but a stronger, more confident social development.
She is now living a happy life with her family, friends and bright future.
Hope you also share her joy! |
